Can NDIS Funding Pay for Transport?

A simple guide for participants, families and carers

Getting to work, appointments, community activities or simply catching up with friends is a normal part of life. For many people living with disability, transport can be one of the biggest barriers to independence.

A common question we hear from participants and families is:

“Can my NDIS funding pay for transport?”

The short answer is yes — in many cases the NDIS can help with transport, but how it works depends on your goals, your circumstances, and what is included in your plan.

Let’s break it down in plain English.

When the NDIS May Fund Transport

The NDIS may provide funding to help participants travel to activities that relate to their goals. This might include getting to:

  • Work or employment training

  • School, TAFE or university

  • Therapy or medical appointments

  • Day programs or community activities

  • Volunteering opportunities

  • Social and recreational activities

Transport support is designed to help participants build independence and stay connected to their community.

The Three Main Ways the NDIS Supports Transport

Transport can appear in an NDIS plan in a few different ways.

1. Transport Funding (Transport Allowance)

Some participants receive transport funding in their Core Supports budget.

This funding is usually provided as a regular payment to help with travel costs, such as:

  • Taxis

  • Rideshare services

  • Public transport

  • Community transport services

The amount varies depending on how often a participant needs to travel for work, study or other activities.

2. Support Worker Transport

NDIS funding can also cover a support worker assisting you to travel.

For example, a support worker may help you:

  • Get to a day program

  • Attend community activities

  • Go shopping or run errands

  • Visit friends and family

Support workers can help with planning trips, using public transport, or driving you to activities where appropriate.

At Bridges Alliance, our support team regularly assists participants with community access so they can enjoy meaningful activities and build confidence in the community.

3. Provider Transport Costs

If a support worker drives you to an activity using their own vehicle, provider travel costs may apply.

These costs are set under the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits and help cover things like:

  • Fuel

  • Vehicle costs

  • Travel time in some situations

A good provider will always explain these costs clearly before supports begin.

What the NDIS Usually Does NOT Pay For

The NDIS does not usually fund everyday transport costs that everyone has, such as:

  • Buying a standard car

  • Petrol for personal use

  • Regular commuting costs unrelated to disability supports

However, in some circumstances the NDIS may fund vehicle modifications or specialised transport supports if they are considered reasonable and necessary.

Transport and Your NDIS Goals

Transport funding is always linked to the goals in your NDIS plan.

For example, if your goals include:

  • Increasing independence

  • Building social skills

  • Finding employment

  • Participating in community activities

Then transport support may be included to help you achieve those goals.

This is why it is important to talk about transport needs during your planning or plan review meeting.
