Changing Your NDIS Plan: What You Need to Know

Your needs, goals and supports can change over time. The good news is the NDIS is designed to be flexible, so your plan can be updated if it no longer fits your situation. Understanding how plan changes work can help you get the right support at the right time.

At Bridges Alliance, we work alongside participants, families and support coordinators to help make sure NDIS plans continue to support independence, wellbeing and meaningful community participation.

When and Why You Might Need to Change Your Plan

Sometimes life changes — and your NDIS plan may need to change too.

You might consider requesting a plan change if:

  • Your support needs have increased or decreased

  • Your living situation has changed (for example, moving into Supported Independent Living)

  • You need different types of supports to achieve your goals

  • Your current funding isn’t enough to cover the supports in your plan

  • Your goals have changed and you want to try new activities, build new skills or increase independence

  • Your circumstances change unexpectedly, such as a change in health, carer support, or safety needs

If your current plan isn’t working as intended, it’s important to speak up early so supports can be adjusted.

Plan Variation vs Plan Reassessment – What’s the Difference?

There are two main ways an NDIS plan can be changed.

Plan Variation

A plan variation is a smaller change made to your current plan.

This might include:

  • Adjusting funding levels

  • Adding or removing a support

  • Fixing an error in the plan

  • Updating goals without changing the whole plan

A variation usually does not replace the entire plan, and it can often be completed more quickly.

Plan Reassessment

A plan reassessment (sometimes called a plan review) looks at your whole plan again.

This usually happens when:

  • Your needs have changed significantly

  • You require different supports

  • Your plan has reached its scheduled review date

During a reassessment, the NDIA may review:

  • Your goals

  • Current supports

  • Progress you have made

  • Evidence from therapists or providers

The outcome is typically a completely new plan.

How to Request a Plan Change

If you believe your plan needs updating, you can request a change through the NDIA.

Here’s how the process usually works:

1. Gather supporting information
This may include reports, assessments or letters from therapists, support providers or your support coordinator.

2. Contact the NDIA or your support coordinator
You can request a change by:

  • Calling the NDIA

  • Using your myplace portal

  • Speaking with your Local Area Coordinator (LAC)

  • Asking your Support Coordinator to assist

3. Submit a plan change request
Explain what has changed and why the plan needs updating.

4. NDIA reviews the request
They may:

  • Ask for more information

  • Speak with you or your support network

  • Decide whether a variation or reassessment is required

5. Decision and updated plan
If approved, the NDIA will update or replace your plan.
